This McCalls Patterns wrap dress seems to have great reviews on Amazon and other sewing pattern review websites. I think a wrap dress is universally flattering because it’s snug at the waist and loose on the hips. So regardless of whether you are lucky enough to have curves, or if you are like me and have zero curves, the fabric just flows over your hips, giving the illusion of a svelte waist.

Making and Attaching the Skirt
Woohoo! We are on the last step to complete our McCalls Patterns M6959 dress – well done everyone!
The Pattern
The McCalls M6959 Wrap Dress comes in four designs. I’ll be making Design A, with the short sleeves and flared skirt. At this stage, I can’t see myself making any adjustments, other than the hem length. I think I’d like my dress to sit a little higher above the knees than what the model is wearing.
The packaging states “Easy” on the front, so I’m hoping we’ll get through this sew along without any mishaps!
You can purchase a digital version at the McCalls Patterns website. Amazon also sells and ships you the printed paper pattern.
The Fabric
I’ve purchased a blue floral Japanese lawn from Spotlight. I’ve purposely gone for a fabric with a random pattern, instead of a checks or stripes. It makes things a lot easier when you’re stitching pieces together if you don’t have to worry too much about matching the pattern on the fabric.
To make Design A, you also need some bias tape and a thin ribbon. I think the ribbon must be for the inner tie.
Join the Sew Along
I’ll start sewing this dress in early February 2016, so let me know if you’d like to sew it together. Can’t wait to get started!
Let’s sew McCalls Patterns M6959 wrap dress together!

Count me in!! What a cute dress! (And I can breastfeed in it which is a plus!)
Woohoo thanks Jessica! My thoughts exactly on the breastfeeding capability of this dress 😀
I already have this pattern!! Cool. And A is exactly the one I want to make. Never used a pattern in a package before so I’m a little weary about it. That’s why I never tried to before. This is awesome! I’m joining in! 🙂
How cool that you already have the pattern! Thanks for joining in, we can figure it out together 🙂
YES! I’m in! Double gauze for me!
Nice. Love double gauze.
Yes! I’d love to do this with you. I’m going to use a light cotton with bright colors.
Yay, welcome to the sew-along.
I’d love to partake, although I have a different wrap dress pattern already so I’ll use that one to cut down on costs! Already have the fabric…chose it long ago lol
Sounds good. Glad you can use your wrap dress pattern 🙂
So excited to join in on my first sew along!
Welcome Theresa 😀
Hello from cold, snowy New Haven, CT(USA)!! I too have this pattern. I’ve had it since last winter and never got around to making it! 🙁
I’m a very new sewist, taught myself how to sew a year ago by making mens bowties. So glad someone shared the sew along info on my news feed. Yayyyyyy me!! 🙂 I’m very excited to learn from you & to create this beautiful dress.
Hello Kenya 🙂
That’s so cool that you already have this sewing pattern on hand, it’s meant to be! Looking forward to starting the sew-along in February 😀
I completed a sew a long last year of a 19 40’s sun frock and loved it, would love to join please.
Sounds fab, welcome on board, Chris!
I have never been in a sew along before but I think it will help the creative juices keep flowing. I’m in.
Awesome, welcome Amanda!
Looking forward to making this dress. Count me in!
Welcome to the sew-along, Paulette!
I’m in! This is a very cute dress!!
It is a cute dress isn’t it? Looks great on lots of other sewing bloggers who have sewed it. Welcome to the sew-along – so excited to get started!
Hey! Thanks for checking out my blog 🙂 I responded to your comment there – but I’m not sure if it updates you? Have fun with the sewalong – the dress is great!
Hey Amy! Thanks so much – I love your version so I hope mine turns out somewhere close to yours 😀
I would love to join in! I really enjoyed sewing this dress. Now all I need to is decide which view, lol.
Welcome! Yes I’m yet to see any photos of the fitted skirt version being made. Maybe you’ll be the first one?
This will be a first sew along for me. Help build confidence, I am having problems since my serger won’t act right. Just getting the umph back just using a sewing machine..This way it can be extra neat.
Welcome Bridgette to the Sew-Along 🙂
What a shame about your serger. I had to survive 3 years in the US without a serger, but once I figured out how to get a nice zig-zag stitch on my regular machine, it was all ok.
Hello Rin.
The sew along sounds like a lot of fun and I would like to join in. I have mad a wrap dress in the past which I like very much but can pass on a word of advice from a mistake I made then. Choose nice ties for the inner. I just used mismatching pieces of tape and every time I do up the dress I regret that the inside doesn’t look as nice as the outside. I think making self fabric bias strips to use would have been a much better solution.
Hi Amanda!
Thanks so much for your great tip.
That’s so true, we sewists spend hours making garments, we should make an effort to make the inside look great shouldn’t we?
Great idea. Off to lincraft this week to try pick up the pattern
Yay! Part 1 of the Sew-along is now up and there’s some findings in there about fabric choice which you might want to check out before settling on your fabric.

I just bought this pattern. I think I’ll make it for my daughter who’s expecting a baby in May. I’m a procrastinator and can never decide what to make so thank you so much for the inspiration ☺
Glad to hear you’ve been inspired to sew! Thanks for joining in the sew-along 😀

how many yards of fabric and bias tape did you buy for this project? Just ordered the pattern 🙂
Hi Julia – it depends on what size you are making. The table at on the back of the sewing pattern packaging tells you the yardage. It’s a fab dress, you’ll love it I’m sure.
I seem to have lost/missplaced/ destroyed peice 8 of the pattern. Does anyone know how I can get a replacement ??
Maybe contact McCalls and they might be able to help.
