I have an exciting new sewing tutorial for you! It’s a free sewing pattern for a reversible shift dress – or LBD (little boxy dress), as I like to call it.
The dress can be worn two ways; as a pleated crewneck…
…or a simple v-neck.
You will need
- Paper for drafting the sewing pattern
- Muslin to test the pattern
- Bias tape (0.5″ or 1.25mm wide) to test the pattern
- Final fabric*
- Matching bias tape (0.5″ or 1.25mm wide) for final dress
* I used a light to medium weight polyester suiting fabric.
You can make your own bias tape, especially for the test version of the dress. For the final garment, I used a ready-made black bias tape to match my final dress fabric.

How to wear
Just a little sneak peek of the ways you can wear this dress once you've made it. This LBD is really versatile, so you can change its look by adding a belt or a statement necklace.
It's winter, so I've been wearing the dress with layers, like a shirt underneath or a cropped sweater on top.

love it 🙂
Thank you! It took AGES to put the tutorial together!
I just made this today, it’s so great! Thank you so much. My first adventure with bias tape. I got it in the end!
Well done, you’re really fab.
Kate
Hi Kate 🙂
So glad you were able to make the dress.
Bias tape is lots of fun once you get the hang of it. So satisfying when you can stitch it neatly too!
Hi Rin, I love this shift! How do you finish the neckline and armholes? Facing?
Hi Ai, the neckline and armholes are finished using bias tape. The video is now up on YouTube!
I love this. Very simple and easy
Wonderful! I love how you showed the versatility of this piece! Basics are everything! Thanks for this!
Love this! How many yards of fabric does this pattern require?
Thanks Ashley. It really depends on the width of the fabric, and your size and height. I used about 1.5 yds, but I’m pretty small (US Size 4, 5’5).
Hi! I just found your blog by searching on Google free sewing patterns and I found this amazing pattern! I absolutely love it! The only thing is I am size 12 UK and I am quite tall. How do I add more length and width to the pattern please? Thanks a lot
Hi Sophia
Thanks so much for your kind comments!
Did you see the YouTube videos? The first one goes through how to measure the right size for your width and height.
Please let me know if you have any questions!
Rin 🙂
This looks gorgeous, thank you. The YouTube videos look really easy to follow so hopefully mine will turn out as good as yours.
I’m going to attempt it this afternoon, I may make it shorter and into a reversible top instead of a dress though.
Thanks Kathryn, and great idea to make a top! I’ve been wanting to make a v-neck peplum top, so I might do the same and add on a peplum waist.
Hi Rin, did you ever get to trying out the reversible peplum top? It sounds WONDERFUL! Please let me know! Thanks
Hi Noni,
Not yet – but I shall add it to my wishlist! I have a huge belly at the moment being 6.5 months pregnant, so I can’t wait to wear things like peplum tops once I’ve had this baby 🙂
Thank you so much for sharing! Such a great tutorial 🙂
You’re welcome Anna – thanks for commenting 🙂
Oh Rin! I just finished my Boxy Dress and i love it! I will be making another one soon! Your tutorial is so clear and easy to follow! Thank you for all your work!
You’re welcome Veronica! Thanks so much for your kind comment 🙂
I am hoping to try your pattern and was wondering which fabrics you would recomend? Thank you
I suggest a suiting fabric, ideally bottom weight so you don’t have to make a lining. Best wishes!
Simple and beautiful. You’re so creative. Thank you for sharing.
This is so awesome! Thank you for sharing your hard work – truly appreciate your generosity! Now I can’t wait to do one for myself
This is so wonderful! Thank you for going to all the trouble. I’ve learned so much about pattern making and doing a neckline from your videos and very precise instructions.
Thanks a lot for this patern and sharing ! I made this dress yesterday and it is just perfect : simple and so classy… Morover it is so convertible, it can look totaly different according how we wear it.

I still can’t find it with this email but signed up with another email when I couldn’t find it and it has gone through to there. Looking forward to having a go at making this this weekend!
Just emailed you the patterns – I hope you can find them!
What an amazing tutorial, so clear and concise. Thank you really, i will try it today!
So glad you like it Marine! I’d love to see what you make 🙂
Hi Rin. I liked it. it is very cute. can you please advice what kind fabrics could be used for this?
thanks.
Hi Rami, thanks so much! I suggest any fabric that is woven (ie no stretch) and also is bottom weight (so that it’s not see-through). I used a polyester suiting fabric, but you could use cotton, linen, etc as well.

Hi Rin, could the Seems ( neck And arms) also be done with fabric instead of biastape? Thanks
Hi Kayleigh.
Yes, I don’t see why not..hmmm..maybe either make some bias tape with fabric, or you can make a facing for the neck and arms with fabric. With facing though, you might add some unwanted bulk to the inside of your dress.
Hi Rin,
its very lovely dress. love it.

Hi Orn – No worries at all I will email it to you today!

Hi Rin! I really love the pattern and your tutorial! Do you think i can add som 3/4 sleeves? How would you do it? Thanks a lot
Hi Verena 🙂
Cool idea to add sleeves! I think you should either trace the sleeves of an existing dress you have to make a sewing pattern, OR use the sleeves section of a sewing pattern of a 3/4 sleeved dress. You just have to make sure that the armhole width of your shift dress matches up to the top of your sleeves pattern.

I am a beginner and I am not confident with a bias tape. Is there a way of finishing this dress without it? Many thanks!
Hi Karolina,
You could make a facing for the neckline instead of bias tape, but I think bias tape would be easier.
To give you confidence, you could hand stitch the bias tape in place first, before going over it with your sewing machine. You can remove the hand stitched thread afterwards. Just go very slowly with your sewing machine and it should turn out nicely.
Okay I’m concvnied. Let’s put it to action.
Is nice

You’re welcome Fleur! Thanks for your kind comment 😀
Hi! Super clear tutorial it’s ao much easier to follow than other tutorials. I was wondering what I could do if I don’t have an existing dress to trace the armholes? Is there any way to measure your arms, or use another shirt?
Hi Maddi. If you don’t have a sleeveless dress, than I think a sleeveless top (like a tank top) would work just as well. You could also measure your armhole size, but if I think tracing an existing garment is a lot easier. It’s pretty difficult to get the measurement correct if you are measuring yourself!
i dont have a dress sloper or a dress form. any tips on going forward without those. thanks. new to site and love!!
Hi Lynn,
Hmmm, I would use an existing dress which has a similar shape. Instead of a dress form, you can stand in front of a mirror and use yourself as the dress form maybe? Or if you have a friend who has a similar size and shape to you, you can ask for their help.

ah! i was w/ you until the pinning and sewing of the bias tape. i don’t think i got it right! (i’m new to sewing) is the right side of the dress the outside? is the bias tape supposed to go on the right side or the wrong side? is it supposed to be folded over?
never mind. i watched it again and the bias tape is supposed to go on the right side. i did it incorrectly on my muslin.
Hi, I’ve subscribed but I didn’t receive an e-mail with all your patterns ;(

Hi Rin, I am always interested in dressmaking, however, as a beginner, i have no idea how to choose the type of fabric to use. I hope you can have post introducing types of fabric and material, its pros & cons and what it is suitable for.
Hi Rin, i am always interested in dressmaking. However, as a beginner, i have no idea what type of fabric to use. Do you mind writing a post introducing the types of fabrics suitable for garment making, including its pros and cos, tips for sewing with the material etc. Thank you!
Hi Lingyu!
Welcome to dressmaking! I would love to do a blog post about types of fabrics. Thanks for the awesome idea!
Hi Rin. I just came across your LBD and I love it. I’m short and have been thin my whole life. As time went on I’ve gained 25 or so pounds. I’m a young 61 year old and haven’t been able to figure out how to dress this “mature” body. Well I made your LBD and it’s amazing. Even with my 5 foot tall and 135 pound body. I think it probably looks good on all body types. I’m going to try to figure out how to send you a photo. Thank you so much.
Hi Debbie!
Ohmygosh that is so awesome – I’m super excited that you were able to make the dress AND love it!
I would love love love to see a photo – you can post it on my Facebook page if you like: https://www.facebook.com/SewinLoveBlog
OR you can email it to me =D
Came upon your dress as I was searching for a dress to make from reversible “two-sided” fabric. With the modifications of a felled seam on the sides, cutting of my own bias tape from this fabric and a bias tape trim hem I can see my way to making a reversible/reversible dress. How Very Serendipitous!
But then again every great idea is 1% inspiration and 99% perspiration. I will let you know how it turns out if I ever get it finish. Thank you for your inspiration-perspiration in this endeavor.
Hi July!
Wow, a reversible-reversible dress – that’s a real tongue twister! Love the idea and I really hope you can make it work. Coming up with ideas and experimentation are my favourite parts of sewing my own clothes. I’m very much looking forward to your update.
Thanks for stopping by!
Rin
Thank you so much for the LBD Little Boxy Dress tutorial and pattern. Watching you make it makes me feel confident that even I can do it. I want to make myself a flapper’s dress based on your dress, by adding fringe along a low hipline…. Thank you for generously sharing free patterns!
You’re welcome BG! Thanks so much for your kind comment 🙂
What a wonderful idea to make a flapper dress. You’ll have to make a matching headband!
I don’t receive the links… 🙁 want to make the dress but need the pattern.
Hi, I subscribed but i did not receive the pattern 🙁 i checkt my spam filter, but nothing…

Hello

How long does it take to make it?

Hi Rin!
Thank you so much for making this video! I’m new to sewing and, I’m Not sure I am doing the pleats correctly. What type of pleats are you folding? Box? Thank you again! Love your tutorials!
So glad you like it Stephanie! I’m not sure what the pleats are called – hopefully you can just follow the video to make the pleats!
hi. I love this pattern. It looks so flattering! Can it be made in knit fabric too? i have some gorgeous knit that would look great in this pattern, but I’ve never used knit before!
Hi Bekkie,
So happy you like the pattern! I suggest using a woven fabric though, not a knit. Perhaps you can use your knit fabric for this cocoon dress: http://www.sewinlove.com.au/2015/10/10/diy-cocoon-dress-free-sewing-pattern-review
Rin,
Thank you for sharing your patterns. I just signed up to get them. The pictures don’t show the Reversible LBD as being one included in the pattern. Is it included?
I am looking forward to scaling up to fit me both the REV., LBD and the Cocoon dresses, both look super comfortable.
Hi Pamela,
The reversible dress is in the free patterns collection, but only for my size. The video shows you how to draft one to suit your exact size.
Thanks,
Rin

Hi Rin!!
Thank you for this great tutorial!! I was looking to see if rayon fabric would be suitable to make this dress? thank you!
Hi Olivia,
You’re welcome 🙂
I think rayon would be fine for a summer weight dress. Hope it works out well for you xx

Hello, Please explain again from your fourth video, at 35 seconds into Lesson 4. You are cutting the V to accommodate the bias tape, but camera is so out of focus I have absolutely no idea what you mean. Am I cutting the material to the seam allowance OR the material and bias tape to the seam allowance? You warn not to cut the bias tape, but how does the bias tape fit the V that is cut. Please please make this much more user friendly. The entire fourth lesson video is not put together in an easy to understand manner. You must have been getting tired by then. All good up to that lesson!
Made this dress some days ago. Just put instead of the bias an interfacing.
So great yo made that Tutorial which is just so easy to unterstand!
Greatings from Germany
Anja
Thanks Anja – great idea to use interfacing!
this looks great, I am trying to get your free pattern as a starting point but although I have filled in the registration- nothing has come through by email. can you help please
Hi Rin,
I just made this dress, but I’m finding that the V neck doesn’t sit flat. One side tends to have a bump, in fact it looks a bit like some of your photos . Unfortunately it seemed to sit right before I did all the finishing. Do you have recommendations for how to correct that?
It’d be nice if the fix could be done without disassembling the dress again, but I completely understand if it needs to be taken back to the pattern/muslin stage.
Update: I removed the neck binding and stay-stitched the neck, using it to even out the stretch along the V, then rebound the neckline. It sits flat(ter) now.

Hi! I am very new to sewing and this seems like good place to start with making dresses for myself. One question, am I supposed to draw the pattern myself or is there a patterns I can actually download and trace? I did not receive that and can’t find a download link. Thank you so much.
Hi Laura! Yes the pattern is self-drafted 🙂
Hi, Rin!
Thanks for making this pattern available and making the instructions clear and easy to follow.
I wanted to use bias tape/binding that’s a different color than my fabric for the neckline and have it be visible. Would I apply it in the same way as in the video, but starting on the wrong side of the fabric and proceeding from there? Or would the process be different?
Thanks, again!
