On my last trip to Japan, I was inspired by a daytime cooking show to start making bento box lunches for my husband. I’ve eased myself into it by making lunch twice a week. When I first started, it used to take me over an hour to prepare! With practice, I am now far more efficient and only take up to 45 minutes. It’s still lots of effort (and planning) but I really enjoy it; especially at the end when I get to make the food look pretty! Oh and I have one, very happy husband.
Here are 16 of the many bento lunch boxes I have made this year.
Clockwise, from top left (below):
- Cod with sweet miso sauce, Purple cabbage coleslaw, Nori egg rolls
- Tuna and corn rice, Carrot and bean sprout namuru salad, Fish cakes, Mini chicken rissoles
- Oyako-don (chicken and egg on rice), Pickled carrot and celery salad, Hijiki and soy bean salad
- Hijiki brown rice, Vegies and kombu stir-fry, Ginger chicken stir-fry, Dried daikon salad

- Chicken karaage (fried chicken), Hijiki and carrots, Egg rolls
- Natto pasta, Chicken rissoles and mushrooms, Steamed vegetables
- 3 types of rice balls, Beans and cucumber salad, Ham egg rolls

I rely a lot on the Japanese cooking community, Cookpad for recipe inspiration. Apparently, they are bringing out an English version too!
レシピはよくクックパッドからインスピレーションをもらっています。英語バージョンももうすぐでるようです。

You should be writing an English book for those of us doing Bento in the states. Include your great pictures, recipes, and stories. Your part way there already with what you have on your blog. Let me know when you do or need a proof tester. 😉
Haha thanks Bill!
I’ve been thinking about starting this for my Husband to take to work for lunch but I don’t know where to start or what to cook first. Any tips?
I think having a rice cooker is really helpful. And I would start with something really simple like chicken teriyaki and some veggies 🙂
April 16, 2017, 12:40 p.m. PDT Heaven, I’m going to prepare a more detailed response to your inquiry about “where to start” your bento box preparation. However, this will get you going from wherever you are now in organizing to make bento box lunches
I am in Los Angeles, California, U.S.A. I have a residence in the Koreatown section of LA although I’m not Asian. I’m Jewish.
I’d start by COLLECTING IDEAS: Your recipient’s food preferences and recipes for them; containers (think “outside the box”); layout and design (This website has some dandy bento box displays that you can pattern your plating after. You can look at restaurant menu photos; Pinterest by “bento”.
I suggest you find books in the library on bento boxes and bento to-go meals. I have two. “The Lunch Box” by Kate McMillan and Sarah Putman Clegg (publisher wendonowen; 2011; San Francisco, CA, USA). “Everyday Bento” by Wendy Thorpe Copley (Tuttle Publishing; 2014).
Amazing! Hi! I was searching around on Pinterest and found a link to this post. Where did you get your bento boxes?
Thank you!!
Thanks Dominique! From memory, I believe these bento boxes were just from Daiso.
Hi Rin,
is there anyway you could repost the recipes again? We live in Sydney and my wife is Japanese, i want to make her lunches so she can feel more at home.
Thank you in advance
Kevin
Hi Kevin,
How lovely of you to make bentos for your wife!
I never wrote down the recipes, because I tend to either improvise or look things up on Cookpad. Cookpad is probably the most popular recipe index in Japan. They were starting an English website last time I checked, so you might want to try there for the thousands of recipes.

Just wondering.. Do most people make their bento boxes the morning of or the night before? Or is it more of a personal preference?
Hi Tia,
In Japan, everyone makes the bento in the morning. Traditionally, you don’t refrigerate the bento. It gets eaten at room temperature. For this reason, we season everything well so it keeps from spoiling.
Nice bento and idea, i love it, and anyway visit our site https://disertku.store/
Nice post and thanks for the tips
