Do you ever walk into stores and go, “I can totally make that”, or “there’s no way I’m paying for that, it’s so easy to make!” This is one such top. Although it took me a long time to get around to actually making it, as I had thought, it was super easy to both draft up and sew.
This cropped tank top is a real wardrobe staple and goes well with all high waisted bottoms. The neutral colour is a bonus. I bought the fabric at Vinnie’s (Australian charity store) last year, thinking I would use it to make some palazzo pants. Well, the palazzo pants trend came and went, so I have made something less fashionable and more practical instead. It’s a lovely suede-like material, quite thick and best of all, does not fray.
I must apologise for my lack of blogosphere presence. I do have the best excuse of all, and that is that I am after all getting married in less than 5 weeks (!). As much as I’ve loved the organisation process and making decorations and things, it definitely takes up a lot of my time. Let’s just say I’m really looking forward to the honeymoon.
The pattern I drew is available for download from my Free Creative Resources Library, which you can sign up to access below:
It’s a very easy, basic pattern, but here are some instructions anyway.
- Right sides facing, sew the shoulders of the front and back pieces together.
- Use bias binding to finish off the neckline. I made my own bias binding from the same fabric.
- Right sides facing, sew the side seams together.
- Use bias binding to finish off the armholes.
- Fold up the hem and stitch.

Hi Rin, just so glad to discover your site. it’s a lovely top you made.
i totally agree with you. Every time i walked into the shops, saw some lovely tops but thinking ‘this is lovely but can’t i actually just make it myself?’ i believe that it is the craftsmanship and label itself that overstate the price of a simple clothing. nevertheless, to be honest, some labels actually have less impressive finishes, looking quite rough too. . it’s all just my opinion.
congratulations on your wedding!
Hi Arina
Thanks for stopping by!
I know what you mean by the craftsmanship of some labels. It’s becoming harder and harder to find well made but affordable clothing isn’t it?
that’s so true! but i have to confess there are some fast fashion stores which i often turn to – latest trends, reasonable cheap prices, what’s more ; the craftsmanship aren’t too bad for its price … i have been going into fabric shops but can i say that fabrics are not cheap here in australia too! (・x・)
Looks fab.

Hi Rin! I subscribed and downloaded this pattern, but for some reason when I open the file it’s not there? Any idea why this happens?
Hi Mufeedah. You have to open the email titled “Your crop tank top sewing pattern”. In there, you need to click on the BLUE link in the sentence, “Here is your free download, Crop tank top sewing pattern. Thanks for signing up and enjoy your sewing!”. Mailchimp attaches a .vcf file to these emails, and a few people have thought that this is the pattern, but it’s just something that Mailchimp attaches automatically. The download is via the link in the blue text. I hope this helps. Thanks for writing in 🙂

Hi Alika
I’m not sure I understand your question. There’s not really a method name; if you follow the tutorial, you should be able to make this top 🙂
Cheers,
Rin

Hi Rin,
I opened my file but it doesn’t say what size paper to print things out on. Mine didn’t come in a zip file after I opened it in my email. Just a folder with PDF copies of basically what is on this page as the pattern. Is this correct?
I love your patterns – especially this crop tank top and would love to make it. Just need to know how to print it (if I have the right pattern format).
Thanks!
Rachel
Hi Rachel,
The pattern for the crop top is one you need to draft using the measurements on the PDF. The measurements are in centimetres.
Hi Rin,
Can you tell me the easiest way to make this larger as I’m a US6/AU10.
Also, I can quite tell from the pick but did you just the bias as a facing inside or is it as a binding that you can see on the outside?
Thanks!
Hi Rin,
I just stopped by from searching the tank top pattern through Google but I so adore you. Your handmade’s stuff is so pretty and thanks a million for sharing. It’s very helpful for a beginner sewing enthusiast likes me.
You’re so welcome! Thanks for stopping by x
Hi Rin,
Could you please tell me what sort of fabric would be best for making this top? Stretchy or non stretchy?
Thanks x
Hi Tammy,
Definitely non-stretchy!
